Saudi Arabia v Uruguay: Suarez in the spotlight

Luis Suarez will come under the microscope when Uruguay visit Saudi Arabia in a friendly on Friday.

The Barcelona forward is in line to feature for his national team for the first time since biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup in Brazil earlier this year.

While Suarez is banned for Uruguay s next eight competitive fixtures because of the incident, the 27-year-old is able to feature for Uruguay in friendly matches after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) altered FIFA s original punishment, which banned him from any kind of football-related activity .

Subsequently, coach Oscar Tabarez named Suarez in a 22-man squad ahead of the match with Saudi Arabia at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium and Monday s clash with Oman.

Four-time Champions League winner Seedorf in line for Oldham job

Clarence Seedorf is in contention for a sensational return to management with League One strugglers Oldham Athletic.

Former AC Milan boss Seedorf has been out of the game since a brief stint with Shenzhen in Chinese League One, having had a brief spell in charge at San Siro in 2014.

His next stop could be Boundary Park after club sources confirmed to Omnisport that the 41-year-old was one of a number of candidates being considered as a replacement for John Sheridan.

Sheridan was sacked on Monday after a 5-1 defeat to Rotherham United, the result leaving the Latics in the bottom three.

Interim manager Richie Wellens oversaw a 3-2 victory over Peterborough United 24 hours after Sheridan s departure, but his tenure may be short-lived.

Prediction: Napoli vs Roma

Best Odds: 4/6

Bookmaker:

Looking to extend on what has been a real purple patch of late, a high-flying Roma will make the trip out to Napoli on Sunday night.

Napoli

Starting with the hosts, managing to pick up a 2-0 win against Croatian outfit Rijeka while on Europa League duties earlier in the week, Napoli will be desperate to build off of that result. Although on paper it might show that the Blues have managed to claim the win in three of their last four matchups across all formats, it doesn t quite tell the whole story for Gennaro Gattuso s men. Opening this weekend s fixtures with just their goal difference keeping them inside the top-six, Napoli were last seen on Serie A duties putting in a worrying display on home soil. Welcoming league leaders AC Milan …

Diego bracing for tough trip

Atletico Madrid star Diego expects a hostile reception when his team visit Hannover in their Europa League quarter-final second leg on Thursday.

The Brazilian played for Hannover s rivals Werder Bremen between 2006 and 2009 and scored 38 goals in 84 league appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.

Although he knows he is likely to be the target of jeers from the Hannover supporters, Diego said he will be focused on the game.

I never worry about that, I am used to it, Diego told AS.

This is not the first nor the last time I will go through this. I respect Hannover, the players and the fans, but when the game starts, I will give everything for my team to win.

John O’Shea could stay as interim Ireland boss as permanent appointment delayed

John O’Shea could remain interim Republic of Ireland manager after the Football Association of Ireland revealed Stephen Kenny’s permanent successor may not be in place until September.

The 42-year-old former Manchester United and Ireland defender took charge of March’s friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland as officials continued their search for a replacement for Kenny, who lost his job in November.

However, director of football Marc Canham, who said last month the new manager would be announced “in early April”, confirmed on Friday the recruitment process was ongoing and could be for some time yet.

Batshuayi and Drinkwater given fresh starts at Chelsea

Frank Lampard could revive the Chelsea careers of Michy Batshuayi and Danny Drinkwater after pledging to take an open mind into pre-season.

New boss Lampard oversaw his first training session in Dublin on Friday ahead of friendly dates with Bohemians and St Patrick s Athletic.

Belgium striker Batshuayi and midfielder Drinkwater formed part of the travelling party and have been told they will get the opportunity to build a future at Stamford Bridge after failing to win favour with previous coaches.

Drinkwater did not play a minute under Maurizio Sarri last term save for a cameo in the Community Shield, while 25-year-old Batshuayi has made four Premier League starts since arriving at the club from Marseille in 2016.

Clement was offering moral support – Curtis

New Swansea City head coach Paul Clement came down to the touchline to offer moral support in Tuesday s crucial 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace, says Alan Curtis.

Clement, who signed a two-and-a-half year deal to replace Bob Bradley at the Liberty Stadium, was supposed to take a watching brief at Selhurst Park but came to the dugout in each half.

The former Derby County boss watched on as his side claimed a dramatic three points with unlikely goalscorer Angel Rangel netting his first league goal since May 2013 in the 88th minute after Wilfried Zaha s sensational acrobatic strike had cancelled out Alfie Mawson s first-half opener.

And Curtis, who was in temporary charge, had no qualms with Clement s presence as Swansea moved off the foot of the table to close within…
